The obverse (heads) features a portrait of Harriet Tubman in her years following the Civil War, looking confidently into the distance and towards the future. Commemorative coins are only available from the United States Mint for a limited time, as specified by public law. Surcharges from the sales of these coins help fund a variety of organizations and projects that benefit the public. Surcharges in the amount of $35 for each $5 gold coin sold, $10 for each silver dollar sold, and $5 for each half dollar sold are authorized to be paid to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the Harriet Tubman Home, Inc., in Auburn, New York to advance their missions.Ĭommemorative coin programs are created by acts of Congress to honor a person, place, or event.
